Nine teams in the Eastern Region Pool League (ERPL) have registered for the K1 million Presidential Initiative on Sports (PIS) Under-23 pool league expected to start soon.

The number of teams participating this year is said to have increased by five.

Zomba is represented by China Complex, Cobbe Snipers, Oasis and Ecomas. Balaka has Chiyembekezo, Club G and Depot whereas Ntcheu has Spotlite and Golomoti.

Mangochi and Machinga will not be represented in the U-23 showpiece.

ERPL chairperson Innocent Mandevu said this year’s regional tournament is expected to be full of excitement. He said for the past three years, Zomba teams have dominated the tournament, but some Balaka and Ntcheu teams have vowed to break the jinx.

“It is going to be tough and competitive. Some teams want to break the Zomba jinx, but on the other hand, I do not see Zomba teams easily giving away their dominance. This spirit will make the tournament more exciting,” said Mandevu.

Teams in the region agreed to play the league on a home and away basis. Last year, Cobbe Snipers played at the national level after they emerged regional champions.
