Escom loses K54m to vandalism

The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) says it has lost 18 transformers the past four months valued at K54 million (about $129 000) due to vandalism. Transformers in 12 places within Blantyre City have been vandalised since January this year. Maxwell Mjathu, Escom’s district engineer for Limbe, said on Thursday during a showcasing activity where five suspects had been arrested since Tuesday night.

The suspects siphoned oil at Misesa in Manje Area and were arrested when communities blocked the minibus they used after they sensed something sinister. Southern Region Police spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa said the five suspects are yet to appear in court answering vandalism and theft charges.
