Flames defender Limbikani ‘Pupa’ Mzava’s inactivity at South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) side Bloemfontein Celtic may cost his former club, Escom United, R170 000 (about K3.7 million) in unpaid dues.

Mzava was sold to Celtic last May for R350 000 (about K8 million) of which Celtic paid R174 000 (about K4 million).

According to the sale contract, Celtic were supposed to pay the balance after Mzava’s 10 league appearances, but eight months down the line, he is yet to play an official game for Celtic; hence, the delay in payment of the balance.

Celtic did not register Mzava in the PSL as he was still a minor, but now he has reached the required age and is expected to be registered ahead of the second round which starts next month.

Escom chairperson Fanuell Nkhono said the delay in receiving the balance is a setback to the team which is struggling financially as it does not have sponsors.

“K4 million is a lot of money. It could make a big difference in the administration of our club in the absence of sponsors. We are talking to Celtic on mutual agreement so that they can pay the money even if the player has not played for them,” said Nkhono.

Celtic officials could not be reached for a comment.

Mzava, who returned without a deal from trials at Israel side Hapoel Tel Aviv, is not sure if he will be registered with Celtic for the second round.

“I am just keeping my fingers crossed because it is really frustrating as I have stayed for eight months now without playing; and it is not good for my career. But I have been assured that I will be registered, so I am just waiting patiently,” he said.
