The European Union (EU) has said Malawi has all structures and technical resources to hold a peaceful and credible election in 2019.

EU delegation head of cooperation Lluis Navaro made the remarks yesterday during the launch of 2019 election registration at Chinkhoma Primary School ground in Kasungu.

“You have the technical resources to facilitate credible registration, structures such as non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and government ministries and departments to mobilise the people,” said Navaro.

He said Malawi is one of the countries that have demonstrated competence in administering elections in Africa and if the same expertise can be applied using the modern registration equipment, the forthcoming elections will be credible.

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) launched the 2019 election registration exercise with a warning against violence, intimidation and crookedness.

Minister of Civic Education Grace Chiumia advised the youth to desist from being used by politicians who entice them with various items to indulge in violent activities.

“They fool you to cause problems for their opponents, but when you are arrested, they abandon you, so be careful,” said Chiumia.

She also advised all eligible voters to go and register at their nearest registration centre and cast a vote on 21 May 2019.
