EveryChild withdraws 22 from early marriages

In an effort to ensure that children continue with their education and become useful and productive citizens of the country, EveryChild, an international child-focused organisation, has withdrawn 22 children from early marriages in Mzimba.

Speaking in an interview on Friday, EveryChild’s project coordinator for Mzimba, Thomas Moyo, said his organisation has withdrawn 20 girls and two boys from 2012 to 2013.

He said more children are expected to be withdrawn from early marriages as the year progresses.

The children withdrawn come from the area of Traditional Authority Chindi in Mzimba.

Moyo said the 22 have since been re-integrated into their respective families and have since been enrolled in various schools in the district.

He said it is through education that children can grow into useful citizens of the country.

Moyo said as one way of encouraging children to remain in school, EveryChild conducts role modelling sessions, community sensitisation meetings on the importance of education, counselling and guidance as well as supporting needy pupils with school fees, among other interventions.
