Evirom Sisters picked up their spirits at the Chiwembe ground in Blantyre on Saturday to earn a 1-1 draw against Zomba City Queens in the Arthur Peter Mutharika Southern Region Women Football League.

Before the match, the Zomba-based side was at the top of the log table with 33 points from 11 games. They had three games to wind up the league. But Evirom Sisters spoiled the record with a late equaliser from substitute Ruth Sikelo.

Ulemu Phiri put the City Queens ahead in the 21st minute of the second-half.

Evirom coach Fanued Kennedy’s advice to his players paid dividend in the 39th minute when Sikelo slotted-in a loose ball from a goal-mouth scramble.

“We have done it. We are now on our way to win the third prize. My girls have done a commendable job,” said Kennedy after the game.

His counterpart Gift Chiphikire faulted his charges for squandering many chances  in both halves.

The Queens now have 34 points from 12 games whereas second-placed Blantyre Zero have 30 points with a game in hand. Evirom are third with 18 points from 12 outings.
