Former Thyolo Central member of Parliament (MP) Kingsley Namakhwa and Senior Chief Kapichi on Saturday called upon well-wishers to support the construction of sanitary facilities at Khonjeni Health Centre.

The call followed a story The Nation carried last year about women having a bath in latrines.

For over five years, women seeking maternal healthcare have been washing in latrines, a situation the hospital’s medical technician Gustino Joseph said threatens the health of patients.

In response to the story, the former MP and the chief have started constructing bathrooms and latrines. There are two structures with four bathrooms and two latrines.

Red Cross has also joined the project and is constructing a four-bath-room structure.

“I sourced around K1.2 million from well-wishers and the chief provided the bricks. But we still need more support for the structures and facelift of the facility,”said Namakhwa.

He said he is building Ndombole Health Centre to decongest Khonjeni.

Meanwhile, the two leaders have created a hospital fund and those seeking to support the cause can contact Namakhwa on 0998 598 860 or Chief Kapichi 0888 542 305. n
