Musician Faith Mussa will on February 16 this year leave for Norway for a one-month tour where he is expected to have seven music performances.

Mussa said he also expects to conduct workshops and seminars in several music colleges of that country.

Some of the universities include University of Oslo and Norwegian University of Science and Technology’s (NTNU) Department of Art and Media Studies.

Lets Malaw music stand out

“These universities are looking at the fusion of modern music and traditional instruments. And because my music has been a blend of traditional instruments and modern sounds, it appealed to most of the programmes in their colleges. So, they felt it would be good if I can go and give several talks to their music students,” he said.

Mussa said the tour is as a result of a project he did with the Norwegian Embassy and the Department of Art in 2015. He said through the project, some of his works had an overwhelming response to necessitate the tour which has been bankrolled by the universities.

Mussa said after the tour of Norway he is expected to explore cultural elements of Ntchisi and Nkhata Bay, among other districts in the country, for two months.

Mussa said cultural music, especially his songs which fuse modern music and traditional instruments, is attracting attention in Norway.

The Mdidi hitmaker advised other musicians who aspire to export their music to Europe to search within their cultural heritage for inspiration.

“The world is not looking for another Beyonce or John Legend. They already have those people. If we are going to make an impact in the world with Malawian music we should find a way to make Malawian sound standout in whatever music we are doing.

“If it is hip hop, we should make sure that it carries something Malawian. That’s the only thing we can take as new to the world,” he said. n
