The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) yesterday announced the appointment of Alfred Gunda as its new general secretary replacing Suzgo Nyirenda who has left the association to join Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa).

FAM president Walter Nyamilandu said in a press statement that they used Article 39(3) of the FAM statutes to appoint Gunda—a FAM executive committee member—who until his appointment was Mzuzu University assistant registrar.

“As all are aware, Mr. Suzgo Nyirenda, the former general secretary, secured an appointment with the Cosafa as deputy chief executive officer [administration and competition]. As FAM, we are very grateful to Mr. Nyirenda for his professionalism and dedicated service to the association,” the statement reads in part.

“FAM wishes to further inform its stakeholders and the general public that at its executive committee meeting held in Mzuzu on October 29 2016, Mr. Alfred Gift Gunda was appointed as general secretary of FAM as replacement for Mr. Nyirenda. In line with Article 39(3) of the FAM statutes, Mr. Gunda was proposed by the president of FAM and approved by the executive committee.”

Prior to taking up the position, Gunda, a former Mzuzu University (Mzuni) FC player, was a member of the FAM executive committee, a position he has served for less than a year.

He has also previously served as Northern Football Association (NRFA) general secretary before being elected to the FAM executive committee.

Gunda, who holds a Bachelor of Arts (Education) degree and a Master of Science degree in Sports Management, said he was ready to take up the challenge of the head of FAM secretariat.

Meanwhile, Nyirenda has wished Gunda the best as he takes up the position.
