Football Association of Malawi has said it is waiting for consent from Cosafa to officially approach government on the prospect of hosting the regional showcase—the Cosafa Senior Challenge Cup.

The Cosafa tournament is slated to be staged in the country from July.

FAM president Walter Nyamilandu was reacting to Ministry of Youth and Sports’ recent claim that they have not been approached on the matter.

“We can only seek consent from government once sponsorship has been confirmed.

“And as at now, we are waiting for a final consent from Cosafa as regards sponsorship. Informally, government is aware, but officially, they have not been advised,” said Nyamilandu.

He added: “In fact, it is not only the ministry, there are also other stakeholders such as MBC who are supposed to provide broadcasting and providing signal and negotiations are currently under way,” said Nyamilandu

The Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) has said it is waiting for government’s endorsement to host the regional soccer showcase.

Cosafa chief operations officer Sue Destombes last week said both FAM and government would have to endorse the hosting of the 15-member tournament.

“As with any hosting country and association, it is expected that they endorse and support the hosting of the tournament,” said Destombes.

She also said the host nation is supposed to provide match and training venues together with allied services such as security and medical.

Last week, Ministry of Youth and Sports Principal Secretary Alex Mseka said they are yet to be officially approached by FAM on their intention to host the tournament.
