Football Association of Malawi (FAM) and Malawi Digital Broadcast Network Limited (MDBNL) yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the establishment of a football television channel on Kiliyekiliye decoder’s channel 122.

Speaking during the signing ceremony held at Crossroads Hotel in Blantyre, FAM first vice-president Jabbar Alide said the television channel is a milestone in the commercialisation of Malawi football.

He said though FAM suspended all projects because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the association decided to go ahead with the television channel initiative which was first discussed at a football commercialisation workshop.

Alide a judge of the High Court of Malawi said: “It is out of that high-level football commercialisation workshop that we are here today. One of the key results from this workshop was for the association to bring football to all the people in this country through a dedicated pay football television channel.

“The television project is the realisation of our strategic intent as enshrined in our motto of ‘Raising the Bar’. Digitalising the game is the future and this MoU will provide us with keys to unlock the hidden potential that is necessary for the growth and development of the game.”

Initially, the signing ceremony was scheduled for November last year, but it failed after a no-show from MDBNL.

However, MDBNL chief executive officer Dennis Chirwa, yesterday turned up for the event marking the creation of the football pay television—the first of its kind in the country.

He said: “Today, we are making a positive step towards the fulfilment of the project. This project started as a journey which was a wishful thinking. With the guidance and direction through different meetings that were undertaken, we came up with something that we can say we can manage.
