FAM has clarified concerns by some Flames players that they are yet to receive Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) Cup Plate Division championship prize money.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the players said the association had not lived up to its promise over the R75 000 (K2.5 million or R1=K34) prize for the category that was competed for by losing quarter-finalists.Phiri

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) general secretary Suzgo Nyirenda yesterday said they are yet to receive the money from Cosafa.

He said: “We have nothing to hide. There are processes that Cosafa follows. Rules and regulations say prize money is released after 30 days.”

Nyirenda showed The Nation a copy of Cosafa response that read: “We [Cosafa] are presently awaiting incoming funds and are confident that prize monies will be paid by month-end June at latest, hopefully before.”

Malawi beat South Africa 5-4 on post-match penalties after being goal-less in open play in the plate semi-final before ousting then defending champions Zambia 1-0 through Zicco Mkanda’s goal at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace on May 29 to lift the plate.

After winning the plate, FAM vice-president Moses Mkandawire told The Nation that he had been instructed by president Walter Nyamilandu that the Flames players and technical staff should share all the prize money.
