Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has pledged K200 000 (US$606) to each player should the Flames defy the odds and cause an upset in today’s decisive 2014 World Cup qualifier against Nigeria’s Super Eagles in Calabar.

FAM chief executive officer Suzgo Nyirenda said although the pledge is almost nine times less than what the the Super Eagles have been promised, they are still optimistic that the Flames will give out something extra for the cause of their motherland.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has reportedly offered the Super Eagles $5 000 [about K1.7 million].

“FAM has danged an incentive of K200 000 which is way above the [normal] K30 000 (US$90) game bonus that is offered by government,” said Nyirenda.

Meanwhile, Nyirenda said the Flames arrived in Calabar at 5.15pm [Nigerian time] on Thursday and were accorded a warm welcome by the host association.

“Their flight was delayed for about an hour in Abuja due to poor weather,” said Nyirenda.

The team travelled to their Dannic Hotel camp under heavy police escort and got the feel of the match venue later on in the evening. The match is scheduled to kick off 5pm local time.
