FAM not in favour of new CAF presidential vote rule

FAM has said it is not in favour of the rules on presidential race, recently adopted by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

During its annual general assembly held in Seychelles in September, CAF adopted rules that bar anyone outside the executive committee from contesting the organisation’s presidency.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Walter Nyamilandu on Wednesday said they were not in favour of the move.

“The matter was debated at the general assembly and some of us were not in favour of the rule. It is a very unpopular amendment to the constitution because it is deemed to be undemocratic.

“I am not surprised that the Liberian FA has taken an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport over the matter,” said Nyamilandu.

Incumbent CAF president, Issa Hayatou, who has been in the role since 1987, is the sole candidate so far ahead of elections that will take place in Morocco next March.
