FAM optimistic about realising WC dream

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Walter Nyamilandu’s ambitious dream to take the Flames to the World Cup finals in Brazil in 2014 begins on today as Malawi take on Kenya at Moi International Sports Centre (MISC), Kasarani in Nairobi.

Nyamilandu yesterday reiterated that he is optimistic that the Flames will qualify for the World Cup this time around.

“The good thing is that our supplementary budget has been approved by government and this makes it easier for us to plan and strategise well in advance before each crucial game.

“Already, we have played three strength-testing matches which have helped identify and rectify problems,” said Nyamilandu.

He said with the approval of the supplementary budget, FAM will now be able to utilise the Fifa calendar to make sure that the national team has a friendly game whenever there is a break for international games.

Malawi has never qualified for the World Cup finals, but Nyamilandu believes now is the right time. Despite that most of the players in the national team are in the swansong of their careers.

“We have to have self-belief and infect the emerging players so that they too can believe that they have it in them to achieve World Cup qualification. We have talent and with more friendly matches, we can build a new strong team,” he said.

2014 World Cup and 2013 Africa Cup of Nations were some of Nyamilandu’s campaign promises as he sought re-election for the country’s top football seat last year.

Just last week, he fulfilled part of his his promise by clinching sponsorship from Carlsberg Malawi for local football giants Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers as well as a national football cup.
