FAM reminds affiliates on candidates requirements

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) election’s electoral committee has reminded affiliates to send background information of candidates they have nominated for the December 12 elections.

The upshot comes after the committee noted that most of the nominations did not have full football career profile of the candidates.

The electoral body’s secretary Suzgo Nyirenda said they reminded the affiliates to ensure all requirements are fulfilled when sending the nomination documents.

“It has been noted that affiliates are submitting their nominations for candidates to stand in FAM’s executive committee elections slated for December 12 2015 in Salima without attaching the required documents as requested on the nomination form.

“These are requirements as stated in FAM’s Statutes( Article 3 and 4) and should be adhered to before a nomination will be entertained by the electoral committee during the committee’s meeting on November 14 2015.

“Kindly send the required documents of your nominees before the deadline of submitting the nominees form of November 13 2015,” Nyirenda’s letter reads in part.

The requirements include a passport size photo, copies of Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) for executive committee member and diploma for president positions.

Apart from these, the nominations must also have a profile of the candidate in terms of his association football involvement.

“One of the requirements is that the candidate must have been involved in association football either as a player or official for five years. What we noted is that most of the nominations do not have such a profile,” Nyirenda said.

In the presidential race, the incumbent Walter Nyamilandu is automatically eligible to contest while Yabwanya Phiri and Wilkins Mijiga will have to be vetted by the electoral body.

Both Mijiga and Phiri were confident they would pass the screening process.

Phiri is owner and patron of former Super League side, Karonga United, while Mijiga, apart from serving as Big Bullets trustee, also served as board member of Malawi National Council of Sports between 2008 and 2013. n
