FAM wants more women in coaching
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) wants more women to graduate as football coaches in the country.
FAM executive committee member Flora Mwandira made the statement at BAT Ground in Blantyre on Saturday when she presented FAM C-coaching licences to 27 graduates, including two women (Hellene Chagala and Memory Chisamba).
The training was organised by the Southern Region Football Coaches Committee (SRFCC).
Mwandira said Fifa requires that at least 10 percent of trainees in coaching courses should be women.
“As FAM, we believe that women football would tremendously improve if more women are trained as coaches. However, it is disappointing that most of them are shying away from such training as witnessed here,” she said.
According to SRFCC general secretary Aubrey Nankhuni, they organised the training in conjunction with the Malawi Schools Sports Association (Massa). He said out of 29 participants, two failed, representing a 90 percent pass rate.
He said the graduates will be monitored in the next two years so that they can stand a chance of being considered for a Confederation of African Football (CAF) Class-C coaching licence.
The FAM C-licence coaching course, which had Stewart Mbolembole and Karen Chaura as instructors, was initially meant for teachers, but others were included after half of the targeted 35 teachers failed to turn up.
