Fans rap Piksy’s time blues at Mibawa

Piksy’s high-billed show at Mibawa Cafe in Malawi’s commercial city, Blantyre, on Saturday exposed yet another episode of poor timekeeping plaguing the country’s music industry.

In what is becoming a boil in the success of urban music, the jam, which was slated for 8pm, only got its first curtain-raising act around 11pm—condemning Piksy’s takeover to the wrong side of midnight.

The delay riled fans who had to wait into the dying hours of the night and commentator Gregory Gondwe squarely termed it “unbecoming and unprofessional”.

“Unpunctuality is an incredible betrayal to music loyalists as well as a show of dishonour on the part of the artists. It is time artists learned to start performing on time instead of waiting for the venue to be filled,” said Gondwe in an interview at the gig.

However, spokesperson for Piksy’s label, Nde’feyo Entertainment, said performers need ample time to consolidate their confidence before appearing on stage.

“Timekeeping is important for sure, but artists need a moment to get in shape if they are to dish out their best,” said publicist Kimpho Loka.

Rapper Piksy, currently Airtel Malawi brand ambassador, put up a more improved act than last month’s launch of his Maso in Lilongwe which was marred by mismatches between his voice and the instruments.

He kept the patrons glued to the dance floor with his portion of rhymes and the frenzy turned wild when he unleashed Unamata, Ponya Mwendo, Appetiser and Uncle Shawty from the debut release.

His fiancée Gladys Kumbatira could not hold her excitement. She invaded the stage with a school of ladies to jive with the man of the moment.

In about one hour, the Yabooka singer tamed his following on the floor—completing a picture drafted by guest performers: Armstrong and Biriwiri.
