Farmers in Lilongwe have recommended Purdue Improved Crop Storage (Pics) bags as the best storage facility for different crops.

One of the farmers from Kaphiri in the district, Anderson Kayesera, said in an interview that since he started using the bags, his crops maintain their good condition for a long time.

“Before I started using pics bags, I had to apply chemicals to my produce to preserve them. But with the new bags, I am now able to store produce for a long time without applying any chemicals,” he said.

Pics bags business consultant Barnabas Komakoma said on Thursday that the bags are made in a unique way that does not give room to pests and insects to survive.

“Pics bags are different from other bags since they have three layers which are tied and closed separately, thereby creating an airtight environment. The unique formation of the bags kills pests and moulds in the crops,” he said.

Komakoma said this year pics bags will be launched today in Lilongwe at Save the Children after being launched in Blantyre District.

He also said the launch in Lilongwe will involve different stakeholders, apart from officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development.
