Fashion designers toe bonya fishing line

Mzati Garments has added Malawi’s hottest contender of the buzzword of the year award to its clothing line—naming its latest release after bonya.

Dubbed Ama Bonya Bonya, the newest label on the market is not only clearly an imitation of South Africa’s AMA KIP KIP but also a celebration of the smallest fish species in Lake Malawi which has become a domestic hit as Malawians are grappling with a raging economic meltdown.

Mzati Garments sales and marketing executive Dennis Imaan co-designed the male and female T-shirts with Stella Nansongole.

In an interview, Imaan said unisex items are a must-have for those who dress Malawian.

“When a design [that was a joke] of the T-shirt went on the social network Facebook, we started receiving orders. So, we dedicated time to design a cool trendy T-shirt which is a celebration of bonya in Malawi,” said Imaan.

The prefix ‘Ama’ has no match in Malawi’s languages, but it could be a contraction for ‘I am’ in urban and rap lingo. Imaan described the T-shirts as a simple fusion of quality and creativity borrowed from their debut label Young Malawian and Gifted (YMG) line which recently dressed Zili Ndi Iwe hitmaker Maskal and his Ndakusowa counterpart Armstrong.

During the Sand Festival in Mangochi last month, Mzati Garments unveiled The Grin Belt which bears colours of the national flag. It was first worn by rapper Tay Grin, hence the name.

Imaan said the clothing company is planning to venture into the sportswear in December.
