Fatal road accident claims 2, injures 13

Two people have died while 13 people are battling for their lives at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital after a minibus they were travelling in was hit buy a bus in Malawi’s commercial city of Blantyre.

The accident, which happened at around 8 in the morning, involved Malawi’s local National Bus Company bus registration number BP 8568 which was going towards  Limbe, and a minibus, BN 3470, traveling the Limbe-Ndirande route.

According to an eye witness, Joseph Mandala, the accident happened because the bus changed lanes to avoid hitting and killing a pedestrian suspected to be drunk. “There was a drunkard man walking in the middle of the road staggering, the bus, which was going to Limbe hit him and in trying to avoid hitting him again, it moved to the lane of Ndirande, where it meet and crashed head on with the minibus,” he said.

Regional Traffic officer for the south, Senior Superintendent Khembo Gumbo, confirmed the accident saying that out of the 15 people the minibus was carrying, two died on the spot.

“Most of the people in the minibus were small scale business men and women. Two people, a male driver and a female passenger died on the spot while the other 13, six women and five men, have been seriously injured,” he said.
