FDH Bank on Friday hailed the country’s sole power supplier, Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom), for bringing power after experiencing flooding due to last month’s incessant rains.

Speaking at a luncheon at Nkula Power Station on Friday, in which the bank gave assorted gifts, including blankets, sugar, soap and flour, to those that directly took part in restoring power, the bank’s head of corporate banking Sitabene Majamanda said they do not take Escom’s efforts for granted.

Escom_power_plantLast month, due to heavy rains that caused flooding, bringing with it silt and debris, Escom shut down its machines at Nkula Power Station, taking about a third of the country’s total power off the national grid.

Escom generates 351 megawatts (MW) of power against a suppressed demand of 350MW.

“We did not expect the power to be back this soon but because of Escom’s efforts the power is back,” said Majamanda.

Nkula Power Station senior station manager Steven Kayira said their team worked around the clock in shifts to ensure that the machines were back and power was restored.
