Dressed to thrill in dark blue, white tracksuits and armed with enthusiasm, some 23 women football coaches yesterday started a week-long first-ever Fifa women football basic coaching course in Blantyre.

And the message from course facilitator at Chiwembe Technical Centre, Fifa instructor Hope Powell—not related to former Malawi senior national team coach the late Ted Powell—was that it will be hard work during the session that will cover practical and theoretical coaching aspects.

“I am here to share my knowledge and expertise. It will be hard work and I want you to enjoy it. My job is to make you better coaches and I hope that by the end of the week, you will be smiling,” said the former England women football team coach.

National Women Football Committee chairperson Severia Chalira hailed Fifa through FAM, for funding the course, which has attracted coaches from 10 best clubs in each region. FAM technical director captain John Kaputa will assist Powell in the course.

“Malawi has the potential, but we lack the technical expertise. Let us hope you will learn and change the face of Malawi women football. Please, do not take this course lightly. It is all up to you. The future is in your hands,” said Chalira.

Speaking when opening the course, guest of honour, FAM chief executive officer Suzgo Nyirenda, said he was encouraged that most of the participants, save for five males, were women.

The participants include Marcy Chamaza, Patricia Banda, Memory Chisamba, Davie Phiri, Maria Mwandira, Sellina Bvungani, Joseph Mtonthola and Ulemu Chrowe.
