Malawi’s 36 elite referees will tomorrow battle it out in a Fifa international referees panel listing fitness test at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

The exercise is aimed at identifying 15 referees to be eligible for international assignments in 2021.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) referees development officer Maxwell Mtonga said participants have undergone Covid-19 test.

“In view of the Covid-19 pandemic, all the referees who will undergo the fitness test have been advised to get tested and only those whose results will come out negative will participate,” he said.

The fitness test comes almost a year following a ban on football activities due to Covid-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, Malawi’s top Fifa assistant referee Benadetter Kwimbira-Mzika said she is ready for the exercise.

“I have been keeping fit despite the long break due to l Covid-19 pandemic,” she said.

After the Fifa panel listing physical tests, FAM will from next week start the regional referees’ fitness tests in preparation for the 2020/2021 season set to kickoff on November 20.

National referees physical fitness instructor Moffat Champiti will conduct the tests.
