Financial crisis at Salima Hospital

Salima District Hospital has appealed to well-wishers to help in alleviating financial problems that have hit the facility.

District medical officer Raymond Nyirenda made the call on Friday when he received 47 mattresses and 20 bags of maize worth K1.1 million ($2 200) donated by Asha Farm.Patients_in_hospitals

The donation comes weeks after the hospital declared it was in a financial crisis and pleaded for assistance from government, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other well- wishers.

In his remarks, Nyirenda said despite efforts by hospital management to arrest the situation, it is getting worse every day, obstructing them from performing their duties efficiently.

He said: “We have been facing challenges in priority areas such as  fuel for ambulances, food shortage as well as payment of locum to staff. The donation of mattresses and maize will help to ease some of the problems, but we are still appealing to other well-wishers to support us.”

Asha Farm representative Yowasi Hassani said there is a need   for all stakeholders to join hands and turn Salima Hospital into a conducive environment for both the sick and staff.

He observed that apart from treatment, a clean and safe sleeping space also plays a significant role in the recovery of patients.

Said Hassan: “ Let me take this opportunity to advise hospital officials to put the donated items to good use.”
