Gears For Careers

Find yourself these mentors

Good mentors can be the oxygen your career needs and also to get ready for bigger things. Mentors give you the extra support you need to advance rather than relying on your personal talents and energy alone. Here are the type of mentors I would recommend:

Someone who keeps you mindset positive:

Who challenges your thinking in a positive way, to be curious and imaginative and forward-looking. Someone who helps you see beyond your mistakes, dust yourself off quickly and keep going.

Someone who is ahead career-wise:

Who has travelled your road already, can help you see the opportunities you are not seeing, navigate pitfalls, work you through your blind spots and the things that will keep you from advancing.

Someone doing bigger scope work:

Who can help you learn techniques and upgrade your skills to handle incrementally bigger roles. This could be a talented person on the rise or someone doing different but bigger work that will be able to share what makes them successful which you can learn from.

Someone in the job you would like:

Who will help you really learn what that job is about, and expose you to the real requirements, challenges and rewards and how you can be more prepared for it. Such a mentor would help you understand what the job is day to day and maybe even provide you the chance to get an inside view of what the job entails and what it takes to do well.

A true careerist:

Someone who has shown they have a well managed career and learn from them how they set their career, how they work to achieve their goals and how they keep their career on track. Someone who can help you leverage their network, have a reach that you would never be able to have on your own and to build a useful personal network too. Such a mentor should ideally be someone who has a bigger, higher-level role than yours.
