Fire on Tuesday burnt a 50-bed hostel at Mtakataka Police Training School in central Malawi of Dedza, destroying several recruits’ belongings.

Dedza Police spokesperson Edward Kabango said in an interview that the fire started at around 9 am.

“At that time, most of the recruits were out training,” he said.

Kabango said they suspected that the fire started from an electrical fault.

He said this was the first time such an accident happened at the school.

“We have only had minor fire accidents such as fire in a part of the kitchen,” he said.

The spokesperson said they are yet to determine the cost of the damage.
