The shop’s manager Charles Jumani said well-wishers and first responders failed to  put out the flames.

He said: “When the fire started, we called Malawi Defence Force Parachute Battalion who came and attempted to douse the fire, but when they went back to fetch more water, the fire got worse.

“Iron sheets, bales of sugar, pesticides, flour, plastic buckets and consumables were destroyed by the fire.”

In a separate interview, Salima Police Station spokesperson Thoko Banda said they are investigating the cause of the fire while Jumani said they are yet to quantify the extent of the damage.

The fire also destroyed bags of cement in a nearby shop within the same building.
