Fire Kachali as Health Minister—Chibambo

Petra president Kamuzu Chibambo has joined a bandwagon of those calling for Malawi Vice-President Khumbo Kachali’s head, demanding that President Joyce Banda should fire him as Minister of Health because his position has been compromised with the Dowa beds scandal.

Chibambo said People’s Transformation Party (Petra) is outraged by reports of redeployment of hospital beds from Mponela Rural Hospital to Euthini in Mzimba.

“Petra is urging a speedy and impartial investigation into this serious allegation so the Malawian people can quickly get to the bottom of this matter,” reads in part the statement released on Wednesday.

In an interview on Thursday, Chibambo said in civilised democracies, individuals take responsibility for the wrongs done under them.

“In order to salvage the image of government, the Minister of Health can no longer be in that position. Somebody else who can inspire public confidence [should] be appointed,” he said.

Said Consumers Association of Malawi (Cama) executive director John Kapito. “The qualities of leadership displayed so far by the Vice-President and Minister of Health require immediate attention from the President and to me time has come for the President to remove him.”
