Fire partially guts Sunbird Ku Chawe kitchen

Fire yesterday gutted part of the kitchen at Sunbird Ku Chawe Inn in Zomba, damaging unspecified items, according to a statement from Sunbird Tourism plc.

The statement said the hotel management were yet to establish the cause of the fire, but assured the public that all operations at the hotel, which is part of the Malawi Stock Exchange (MSE)-listed local hotel chain, have been restored to normal.

Reads the statement in part: “We would like to thank our staff at the Sunbird Ku Chawe, the fire brigade from Blantyre as well as forestry team for their swift action in containing the incident and ensuring that there were no injuries or loss of life.” 

The statement said management of the hotel evacuated all guests at the hotel during the incident as per standard procedure of the hotel chain.

Sunbird is a hotel chain with nine properties, including four city hotels in all the country’s three regions, two beach resorts in Mangochi and Salima, a game lodge called Thawale in Majete Wildlife Reserve in Chikwawa and the recently acquired Kara O’ Mula in Mulanje District.
