In his speech, Mutharika told the children that education is key to success.

“Every job requires education and you need to work hard if you are to succeed. Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus [but also] time to reflect on many things in our lives,” he said.

The President advised the children to love one another as Jesus Christ did by dying for all on the cross.

Mercy Nkhoma, who spoke on behalf of fellow children, commended the first couple for hosting them.

She said the Christmas party had also given them an opportunity to know and interact with the President and the First Lady.

“We only see you on television and hear your voice on radio; this is a rare opportunity for us,” she said.

During the function, the first couple presented gifts to the children.

In December last year, the Mutharikas also hosted a Children’s Christmas Party at the Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe. n
