First Deputy Speaker supports herbal farming

First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Madalitso Kazombo has advised Talandira Women Farming Cluster in Kasungu to continue growing a medicinal plant called artemisia.

He said this on Saturday when he visited the cluster’s garden at Kapinya Village, Senior Chief Wimbe in the district.

Kazombo, who is also Kasungu East Constituency legislator affiliated to Malawi Congress Party, said as a Covid-19 survivor, he wanted to encourage the farmers to continue growing the plant because it has power to heal several diseases.

He said: “Just after some days of being down with Covid-19, I received a call from a friend who is doctor who told me that he was sending me artemisia to supplement the drugs I was given by the doctors.

“After using the herb, there was a huge recovery after some few days.”

Kazombo supported the women with three bags of fertiliser to boost their capital to produce more so that the herb can be sold to people who may need it.

On her part, Talandira Women Cluster chairperson Elinas Chibwato said they can produce tonnes of the plant, but have no reliable market.

“We are a well-established cluster with the possibility of growing a thousand shrubs of artemisia,” she said.

The cluster received artemisia certified seed from Tigwilanemanja Aids Support Organisation through its medicinal garden project with financial assistance from Bridges to Malawi.
