Mutharika emphasised that Christmas would not be meaningful if people did not embrace the spirit of sharing with their neighbours especially those in need.

“Christmas is about love and giving so I just thought it was necessary that while here in Monkey Bay [Chikoko Bay], we should come and make a small donation and cheer the sick at this hospital,” she said.

The items included blankets, buckets, soap, orange squash, sugar and biscuits.

Hospital in-charge James Kumwenda said the donation was a releief to patients.

Mother of the baby boy who was born on the day, Mary Griffin, said God made it possible to deliver the baby on Christmas.

Monkey Bay community hospital has a catchment population of 144 800 people. n
