Football Association of Malawi (FAM) yesterday announced details for the inaugural K45 million Fisd Challenge Cup.

According to a statement from FAM general secretary Suzgo Nyirenda, only TNM Super League teams and 29 district champions from the Presidential Cup will participate, thus excluding regional league teams.

The cup will be played on knockout basis starting at district level to identify eight teams to qualify for the national stage with the South and Centre contributing three teams each while the North will send two teams.

Then 16 Super League teams will be drawn against each other with the top eight teams from last season seeded.

Eight teams from the Super League preliminary round will join the eight district teams for the round of 16.

“The district champions will use players registered during the Presidential Cup, but they will also be at liberty to beef up with any other players based in their respective districts who play for other teams in other leagues including regional leagues, but not Super League,” reads part of the statement from FAM.

FAM competitions manager Gomezgani Zakazaka said the champions will cart home K10 million while runners-up will get K4 million. Semi-finalists will get K1 million apiece and the regional champions will get K1 million while their runners up will pocket K500 000. Third-placed teams will get K250 000.

“There will also be prizes for top goal scorers both at national and regional level. The regional phase kicks off on September 17 with the national final set to be played on December 10,” said Zakazaka.
