Five arrested for shooting two people

Police in Karonga District have arrested five people on suspicion that they had a hand in the shooting of a woman and her grandchild.

Northern Region Police spokesperson Maurice Chapola on Monday identified the five suspects as Jacob Kanyimbo, 41, Zondwani Mwafulirwa ,59, Benjamin Nyirenda, 37, Mabvuto Mwanza, 30, and Joseph Nyirenda 29, all from Traditional Authority (T/A)Wasambo in Karonga.

ARREST

He alleged that the suspects shot Shonga in the chest while the child was hit in the head as they were chatting outside at around 10pm.

The two were rushed to Chilumba Rural Hospital where Shonga was admitted to and is battling for her life while the child was treated as an out-patient,said Chapola.

He said: “We have identified the victims as Dyness Shonga of Kayera Village (T/A) Wasambo in the district and her eight-year-old grandchild.”

Police are yet to establish the motive behind the shooting but have seized the gun they suspect to have been used in the shooting. It was hidden on the roof of Kanyimbo’s toilet, acording to Chapola. n
