Five Burundian refugees have been detained at Maula Prison for allegedly stabbing to death a 26-year-old Malawian after a quarrel at a bar inside Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa.

The suspects are said to have murdered Innocent Kanchancha popularly known as ‘Dokotala’ on a fight at night on March 30 2013.

Dowa Police spokesperson Richard Kaponda said the suspects, who were granted bails in Lilongwe by the High Court, had their bails revoked and taken back to Maula Prison for further investigations.

“On the day, Kanchancha picked a fight with one of the suspects after the suspect threw away Kanchancha’s bottle of alcohol,” said Kaponda.

He said Kanchancha died on spot and the five Burundians were also arrested the same day.

“The High Court sat again in Dowa under Judge Ivy Kamanga on April 19 for further hearing where the State paraded eight witnesses, including a police officer,” said Kaponda.

He said the case was adjourned to April 26 and the suspects will be moving from Maula to Dowa for the hearing.

The suspects are 24-year-old Ndamaniwe Gilbert, Gahungu Melace, 23, Bizimana Jafet, 32, all from Rujidi Province; Miyonkulu Syivio, 35, and Igrimbabazi Pesible, 19, from Kajusi in Burundi.
