Flames camp for World Cup game

Flames coach Meck Mwase has named a 33-member squad of local players to start camp today at Mpira Village in Blantyre in preparation for the 2022 Qatar Fifa World Cup qualifying games against Botswana.

Malawi face Botswana in the preliminary round first leg on September 7 away in Francistown with the return leg set for Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on October 10.

A press statement released on Saturday by Football Association of Malawi (FAM), signed by communications director Gomezgani Zakazaka, said Mwase has given maiden call-ups to seven players, who caught his eye during his Super League players’ assessment national tour two weeks ago.

They include Be Forward Wanderers goalkeeper William Thole and defenders Mzuni’s Lughano Kaira and Justice Chihoma of Chitipa United.

Midfielders, Be Forward Wanderers’ Fransico Madinga, Lloyd Njaliwa of Moyale, Mzuni’s Lackson Sangano and Chitipa United’s Emmanuel Muira have earned their first call ups.

In form Nyasa Big Bullets midfielder Chimango Kaira has been recalled.

In an interview on Saturday, Mwase said he will give all players an opportunity to prove themselves.

“As I have always said the door is open for players. There’s no permanent place for players in the national team. Any player who is impressive will be considered,” he said.

In a related development, Under-17 coach Deklerk Msakakuona has named a 30-member squad to camp in preparation for the 2019 Cosafa Youth Championship.

About 40 boys were selected during a two-day Inter-Regional Tournament two weeks ago competed for places in the final squad from Tuesday this week.

Msakakuona said it was a huge task to come up with the 30 as all the boys did well to get a place in the final squad.

“The boys worked hard and each of one them did enough to earn a place in the final squad, but unfortunately we could not get all of them.

“The 10 players who have been dropped are still part of the bigger picture as back up,” he said.

Malawi will host the Cosafa Youth Championship in Blantyre from September 25 to October 5.
