Flames caretaker coaches pass test

Nyamilandu: We made a proposal

FAM has said it is impressed with the performance of the Flames caretaker coaching panel during the two and a half months it was on probation.

However, Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Walter Nyamilandu said the determination on whether they will be taken on board will be made after getting government’s response to their recommendation.

The interim coaching panel that was headed by Eddington Ng’onamo included deputy coaches Ernest Mtawali and Patrick Mabedi.

“After consultations, our view is that the caretaker coaching panel was impressive considering that they came in within three months.

“We feel the performance was not exceptional, particularly the two games [against Namibia and Kenya], which ended in draws. We also noted that there were some technical shortfalls, but they did reasonably well when you consider that they registered a crucial away victory [over Namibia] and the fact that they did not lose. However, it could have been better,” said Nyamilandu.

However, Nyamilandu said their continuation is not automatic because it is subject to availability of funds.

It is understood that FAM had a preliminary meeting with officials from the Ministry of Youth and Sports as well as Sports Council on the issue on Tuesday evening.

While Principal Secretary II Justin Saidi was elusive on the matter, Nyamilandu confirmed the meeting.

“We submitted a report on how the coaches have performed and our recommendation to the government through Sports Council on Wednesday [Tuesday]”.
