The first group of the Flames squad left the country yesterday for Morocco ahead of the six-nations invitational tournament which is scheduled to kick off on Wednesday.

According to Football Association of Malawi (FAM) general secretary Alfred Gunda and team manager James Sangala, the last group will depart tomorrow.

The advance group comprises eight players—Simeon Singa, Peter Cholopi, Dennis Chembezi, Righteous Banda, Yamikani Fodya, Ernest Kakhobwe and Chikoti Chirwa. The group also includes five officials, namely FAM executive member James Mwenda, coach Ronny van Geneugden, his second assistant Deklerk Msakakuona, team doctor Chikondi Mandalasi and Sangala.

Said Gunda: “The delegation will travel in two groups due to tight flight bookings.

“The advance group will spend a night in Nairobi before connecting to Morocco tomorrow morning [today].

“The rest of the squad will leave on Tuesday and arrive in Morocco on Wednesday.”

Sangala said foreign-based players will also fly straight from their bases to Morocco on Tuesday.

“So, we expect them to arrive in Morocco on Wednesday morning,” he said.

However, as of yesterday, the draw for the tournament had not yet been held.

The other participating nations are hosts Morocco, Togo, Niger, Mauritania and Kenya. n
