Flames fail to go into camp

The Flames will not go into camp this weekend due to uncertainty over funding.

The team was supposed to regroup this Sunday in preparation for 2015 Africa Cup of Nations Group B qualifiers against Mali and Ethiopia slated for September 5 and 10 respectively.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Walter Nyamilandu said the team cannot go into camp without funding.

“There is no funding at the moment for Afcon qualifiers. The team cannot, therefore, go into camp,” he said.

The FAM boss said the concentration now is on the Under-20 team which is preparing for the 2015 Africa Youth Championship final qualification round first leg against Zambia at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre tomorrow.

Flames coach Young Chimodzi described the development as a major setback.

“It’s a big setback because it means we will only camp for a week as the other week will be for travel.

“We are using mostly local players and they have been on break after completing the first round,” said Chimodzi.

Sports Council executive secretary George Jana said they are waiting for government’s response on FAM’s proposed K300 million (about $790 000) extra funding.

FAM already exhausted its K70 million (about $185 000) allocation for the current fiscal year during the games against Benin.
