The Flames’ 2018 World Cup qualifying match against Tanzania raked in K7 million ($12727) gross from gate collections, an amount the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has described as low.

The soccer governing body further laments that the development is a huge setback in their quest to fundraise for the national team’s activities.flames_tanzania1

Speaking in an interview yesterday, FAM general secretary Suzgo Nyirenda said part of the funds realised will be used to pay service providers at the match.

“What it means is that after paying for some services offered during the game, we will not remain with much money,” Nyirenda said.

The GS said they printed 22 000 “and not many were sold”.

He concurred with other analysts who attributed the poor patronage to Malawi’s 2-0 loss to the Taifa Stars in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday and the beaming of the match on SuperSport and other local television channels like Zodiak and MBC.

“The loss deflated the morale among most Malawians, who felt the battle had already been lost,” he said.
