Flames move one place up

Listen to this article

Interim coach Eddington Ng’onamo starts his Flames job on a positive note as his team climbed up one place on the latest Fifa/Coca-Cola ranking released on Thursday.

He inherits a team ranked 113 out of 234 world rated national football teams, 31 from 54 African sides.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has since expressed displeasure at Flames performance despite this slight climb.

“The results of 51 international matches have been taken into account in compiling the current edition…, of which 32 took place as part of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations and 19 were friendlies,” reads www.fifa.com

The rankings are also calculated based on average performance over the last two years, strength of opposition, results, continental football weighting, and appearances at Nations Cup and World Cup finals.

It is for this reason, that despite their poor Nations Cup showing, Ivory Coast are still Africa’s number one.
