Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has taken out its begging bowl to government by requesting for K280 million additional funding for the upcoming Flames assignments.

The assignments, according to FAM general secretary (GS) Alfred Gunda, include the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations’ opening home qualifier against the winner between Comoros and Mauritius, the Championship of Africa Nations (Chan) preliminary round matches against Madagascar as well as the Cosafa Castle Cup.

The Flames are in need of additional funding for their assignments

“We were given a deadline of January 31 and we submitted it through the Malawi National Council of Sports [MNCS].

The budget also includes friendly matches, but we expect to top up with revenue that we will make from some of the home matches,” said Gunda.

He said from the amount, K105 million is the budget for the trip to Madagascar in April.

Gunda added that FAM has also submitted its proposed budget for the next financial year.

“Preliminary meetings for next financial year have already started and we were asked to include that as well,” he said.

MNCS executive secretary George Jana confirmed being in receipt of FAM’s request.

“Yes they did, but it was only last Wednesday though and we passed it over to government for consideration.”

Last month, Minister of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development Henry Mussa said he would support FAM’s move to seek extra funding because it was a justifiable cause. n
