Flames players arrested over pub brawl in Lilongwe
Two Malawi national football team players goalkeeper Simplex Nthala and striker Schumacher Kuwali were on Tuesday evening arrested following a pub brawl at Mimosa Bar in Area 3, Lilongwe.
Nthala and Blue Eagles striker Kuwali, straight from Ethiopia Cecafa Cup on Tuesday evening, went to the joint where they got into a fight with other revelers.
The two were in the company of Kamuzu Barracks players midfielder Harvey Nkacha and goalkeeper Lehman Nthala, a brother to Simplex.
The four beat up the bartender who demanded that they surrender bottles before leaving the joint, according to Lilongwe Police spokesperson Kingsley Dandaula.
“The owner of the bar called the police and they were arrested. They are now out on police bail,” Dandaula said.
A video clip circulating on social media shows the players in police custody in torn clothes after the scuffle.
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) general secretary Suzgo Nyirenda said he was not aware of the incident.
“I don’t know anything about the incident,” he said. “In fact, it’s news to me. Anyway, it’s an off-camp incident and we will have to find out what happened.”
The Malawi national football team arrived in the country on Tuesday after they were booted out of the Cecafa Cup by Uganda following a 0-2 loss in the quarterfinal at Addis Ababa Stadium on Monday. n
…And with this behaviour, should we expect good results from these animals? It seems they do not care about their personal reputation and the brand(Flames/FAM) they represent.
It is well to be loosing matches with educated and disciplined people than these useless. It seems the players are selected/choosen based on their relationships with some seniors at Fam hence the GS is feigning ignorant of the matter for obvious reasons.
