Flames to get special reward

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has said the Flames will be rewarded in a special way for qualifying for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

The Flames took wing to Cameroon 2022 after edging Uganda Cranes 1-0 on Monday in a decisive Group B qualifier at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

In an interview on Friday, FAM president Walter Nyamilandu said: “Most certainly the players will be rewarded for the achievement.

“We will discuss as an executive committee and announce very soon the reward next week after Easter. This is our commitment.”

The Flames pocketed their revised full bonus of K500 000 each for a competitive match win when they beat South Sudan last week before making it a cool K1 million each with the win over Uganda.

FAM contributes K450 000 while government, through Malawi National Council of Sports contributes K50 000.

While applauding FAM for the move to reward the players, Flames captain Limbikani Mzava said what was important to them, was the achievement.

“Of course, players give their best when they are motivated and we very much appreciate FAM’s gesture.

“But as players, the priority was to make our nation proud by qualifying,” he said.

The Flames last qualified for Afcon in 2010.The latest qualification is their third.
