Flood survivors refuse to leave Mulanje camp

Flood survivors camping at Mulambe Primary School in Traditional Authority Nkanda in Mulanje on Monday refused to leave the camp.

The decision to ask the people to leave the camp came as the place is expected to be an examination centre for Primary School Leaving Certificate Education examinations starting from today.

The flood survivors hopeful to receive more relief items

The development has forced the district education manager’s office to move the learners to another centre at Kamwendo Primary School.

Mulanje district education manager (DEM) Enock Chumachawo said Malawi National Examinations Board (Maneb) made the move to avoid inconveniencing the learners.

He said he reported the matter to Civil Protection Committee when students gathered to make sitting arrangements.

“When district council officials came and pleaded with them, the people insisted on staying until they received relief materials their colleagues from other camps had received,” he said.

But Mulanje disaster risk management desk officer Keith Sayenda said the council has run out of relief items. He, however, said some organisations such as Plan Malawi are coming in to save the situation.

He said it is unfortunate that the victims are refusing to leave despite being provided with temporary shelters.
