It will take government 10 days to study the socio-economic impacts of the floods, a director in the Department of Disaster Management (Dodma), James Chiusiwa, said in Blantyre on Saturday.

In an interview after the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) presented an ambulance to Nsanje District Hospital, Chiusiwa said technocrats from various government sectors were expected to start a post—disaster needs assessment in 15 districts hardest hit by the floods.

Said Chiusiwa. “Although housing has been affected the most, the floods have negatively affected so many other areas, including agriculture, health, transport, education and water and hygiene. After the assessment, an evaluator will be brought in to quantify the effects of the floods.”

On Wednesday last week, Dodma secretary and commissioner Paul Chiunguzeni said the assessment of the floods which has seen 230 000 people displaced, around 100 reported dead and 170 missing, will be funded by the World Bank and the United Nations to the tune of $250 000 (K112.5 million).

On the ambulance presentation, UNFPA assistant resident representative Dorothy Nyasulu said the donation was part of the efforts to assist and protect women and the youth in disaster situations.
