Floods have affected 128 households in Traditional Authority (T/A) Mponda in Mangochi, the district disaster and risk management office confirmed on Saturday.

The floods  that affected Nansenga, Chikundo and Chipoka villages resulted from incessant rains on Thursday night and Friday.

Mangochi assistant district disaster and risk management officer Carol Mirinyu said her office was yet to quantify the damage caused by the floods.

“According to the District Civil Protection Committee that went to verify and assess the damage, 53 households have been affected at Nansenga Village, Chikundo Village has 37 households affected while Chipoka Village along the Mangochi-Monkey Bay Road has 38 households affected,” she said.

Mirinyu said 18 houses have collapsed and have been submerged in water rendering the owners homeless.

The Friday floods come barely a month after government responded to over 200 households affected by a rain storm in November that blew off roofs of houses in T/As Mponda, Katuli, Chowe, Chilipa and Makanjira in the district. n
