Flora Suya in first directing role
Malawi’s leading lady of film Flora Suya has debuted in movie directing role in a short film Chimwemwe.
Chimwemwe is about a couple that is attacked by robbers during their honeymoon. The robbers do not find the money they are looking for so they decide to take something more precious.
That leaves a mark on the couple. Being betrayed by the justice and the law enforcement system, the newly-wed wife takes the law into her own hands to achieve her kind of justice.
The 30-minute film stars Precious Denja, Isaac Bonongwe, Blessings Carlos, Edward Chitsulo Junior and Joseph Khamula.
Suya says she was inspired by a real life event.
“One of my friends was raped and the victims are just out there scot-free. And that pains me so much. There are so many rape victims out there. So, I would like to reach out to them,” said Suya.
She said taking on the role of director was exciting and fun.
“It was easy and exciting for a first-timer because my team is as passionate about acting as I am. They have been very supportive,” said Suya.
Although she admitted that she will still star in other directors’ movies, Suya says that her new-found calling will mean that she will not be on long dry spells on the big screen.
“The problem is that with acting you have to wait for a director to cast you for a role. And if they don’t, then you will stay a long time without a movie. But now I will have to share my acting and directing passions to people when I feel the urge to,” said Suya.
Suya said that she will submit the movie, which will be ready at the end of the month, to international film festivals.
