FMB has doubled the Southern Region Hockey League (SRHL) sponsorship to K2 million and has set aside an extra K500 000 (US$1 111) for the inaugural Central Region Hockey League (CRHL).

The bank’s head of marketing Sylvia Mataka announced the developments during the launch of the 2015 league season at the hockey stadium in Blantyre on Saturday.genetrix_hockey

According to Mataka, the increase in the SRHL package coincides with the firm’s celebration of 20 years of existence in the country.

“This year, we are celebrating 20 years of business in Malawi and that is why we thought it wise to increase the sponsorship to a figure similar to our anniversary. We have also pumped K500 000 into the Central Region League to make sure the sport grows in other areas,” she said.

Mataka also revealed that from now onwards, prizes of winners in the men’s category of the competition will not be different from those in the ladies’ section because they believe in gender equality.

Following these changes, winners of last season’s 11-aside league Genetrix men and Genetrix ladies received K200 000 (US$444) each while runners-up and third-placed outfits got K100 000 (US$222) and K75 000 (US$167) respectively.

Hockey Association of Malawi (HAM) vice-president Dean Pinto thanked FMB for continued hockey support and he promised that the money will be used for the intended purpose of improving the standards of the sport in the country.

This is the fourth year that the bank has been sponsoring hockey, whose 2015/16 season will commence early August.
